A brief history*
“The Shaggy Dogs” formed in 1995 from the tattered remnants of the “Sixths” – UQ Soccer’s second Brisbane Commercial League team. An instant success, a wonderful fusion of both novice and talented footballers, the Shaggy Dogs went on to win the double that same year – Sunday BCL Division 4 Champions and Premiers.
The ensuing years have not seen the Shaggies emulate that initial success although the team has reached the finals on at least seven or eight occasions since and have played [and lost!] in five grand finals in the last eight years. Regardless of the success [or lack thereof] of their on-field endeavours, the Shaggy Dogs continually ensure that their spirit off the field remains upbeat and supportive – this is primarily achieved through generous volumes of beer – the Shaggy BBQ is a feature of many home games and Miss Esky a feature of some away car parks! Such is the nature of the team, each year sees many Shaggy Dogs return for another season, and a new litter of Shaggy Pups brought into the fold.
This is the thirteenth year of the Shaggy Dogs, please give them as much support as you can in their pursuit of that elusive second trophy! The Shaggy Dogs now play in the Brisbane Men’s Football competition as UQ’s Metro Division 3 team. In 2006 the Shaggy Dogs finished 4th in the regular season and narrowly losing their semi-final challenge against the league winners.
In 2009, we finished 2nd on the Metro 4 ladder and came runner’s up in the grand final after leading for most of the game. We were also the first team below Div 2 level to make a Metro cup final – we lost in the grand final to UQ Metro 1.
